Deacon Carl Shelton
Deacon Carl Shelton was an executive with two global pharmaceutical companies before relocating Anne, his wife, and sons to San Diego where he entered the permanent diaconate formation at St. Francis Seminary. While in formation he founded a charismatic prayer group at St. Brigid Parish. After ordination in 1980, assigned to continue at St. Brigid, he supervised healing ministries, prayer groups and hospital visitations.
Six months after ordination he traveled to Calcutta, India where he had received permission to live and work in community with Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity. While there, he worked in the House of the Destitute & Dying, the Missionaries of Charities Leper Colony and had daily meetings after morning mass with Mother Teresa.
After returning to San Diego in 1982, he was mandated by Bishop Maher to begin a diocesan food program. With the financial help of Fr. Joe Carroll, the Share Food Assistance program began. The food program outgrew the boundaries of San Diego and, in 1983, Deacon Carl founded World Share to serve outside the diocese.
World Share grew to serving over 500,000 families a month in 25 regions of the U.S.A. – combined with more than 800,000 families in Mexico and 200,000 families in Guatemala. In 1991 World Share was separated from the Diocese of San Diego but continued to assist many organizations in Mexico, Guatemala, and the United States. One of the organizations assisted was Gente Nueva, a Mexican organization under the Legionnaires of Christ which started a micro-bank for the poor named “Compartamos” (We Share). That bank, 20 years later, has branches in all 50 states of Mexico, and in 2007 loaned over $900,000,000 to people who have no other source of credit. The average loan is under $500. All these programs Deacon Carl describes “Compartamos, the child of World Share, just makes visible God’s miracle upon miracle.”
In 1992, Deacon Carl was assigned by Bishop Brom to St. John the Evangelist Church in the Hillcrest area of San Diego. In 2002 he was assigned to St. Patrick’s Parish (30th Street, San Diego), and from 2003 to 2007 Dual Assignments to both St. Johns and St. Patrick’s.
On December 1st, 2007 Bishop Brom assigned Deacon Carl to St. Michael Church San Diego.
